Understanding Giving Tuesday: A Catalyst for Change

As we turn the pages of our calendars to the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, we encounter a day that has become a global phenomenon in philanthropy: Giving Tuesday. Originating in 2012 as a simple idea to encourage people to do good, this day has since transformed into a worldwide movement that celebrates generosity and kindness. It's a day where individuals, communities, and organizations come together to support causes they believe in and help create a better world.

Giving Tuesday serves as a reminder of the power of collective action. It's a day that amplifies the impact of every donation, big or small and highlights the importance of giving back. In a world often dominated by commercial interests, this day refocuses our attention on the values of charity and compassion. It's a chance to step back from the frenzy of consumerism and invest in making a positive difference in our communities.

This day holds special significance for small and very small nonprofits like A Few Good MENtors, Inc. (AFGM). Organizations like AFGM often operate on the frontlines, addressing critical issues within local communities. They work tirelessly to bring about change, often with limited resources. Giving Tuesday provides an invaluable opportunity for these small nonprofits to gain visibility, attract new donors, and raise essential funds to sustain and expand their impactful work.

The support for smaller nonprofits is crucial. Unlike larger organizations, small and very small nonprofits often have a more profound connection to the communities they serve. They are agile, can adapt quickly to changing needs, and often fill gaps in services that larger entities might overlook. Their size allows them to build personal, lasting relationships with those they help, creating a ripple effect of positive change that goes far beyond their immediate reach.

By supporting organizations like AFGM on Giving Tuesday, donors contribute not just to the nonprofit but also to the broader community. Every donation, no matter its size, helps these organizations to continue their vital work, from mentoring youth to tackling societal challenges at the grassroots level.

This Giving Tuesday, let’s remember that our collective support can empower these small but mighty forces for good. Together, we can help them grow, thrive, and continue to make an impact on lives and communities. Let’s join hands to celebrate the spirit of giving and the remarkable power of small nonprofits to change the world.

Reflecting on "Self Destruction": The Enduring Relevance of KRS-One's Message and the Need for Mentorship

If you have been around as long as I have you might remember a rap song called Self Destruction. In 1989, the hip-hop community witnessed the birth of a powerful movement and song that resonates to this day. "Self Destruction," the only single released by the Stop the Violence Movement, was more than just a song; it was a rallying cry. Formed by one of the greatest rappers in Hip-Hop history KRS-One. The movement and its iconic track were born out of a deep concern for the escalating violence within the hip-hop and African American communities.

The background of "Self Destruction" is as impactful as its message. Sparked by the tragic death of a young fan at a Boogie Down Productions and Public Enemy show in 1988, and further fueled by the murder of BDP founding member Scott La Rock, KRS-One was driven to action. He rallied East Coast hip-hop stars to create a song that would resonate with the community, speaking out against the self-perpetuating cycle of violence. Produced by KRS-One, D-Nice, and Hank Shocklee of the Bomb Squad, "Self Destruction" didn't just top charts; it raised over $100,000, all of which was donated to the National Urban League.

More than three decades later, the issues addressed in "Self Destruction" remain relevant. The song's powerful message against violence and the self-destructive paths that many young people find themselves on still echo in our communities today. This enduring relevance highlights a sobering reality: despite progress in some areas, the core challenges of violence and lack of guidance for youth, especially in underserved communities, persist.

The parallel between the messages in "Self Destruction" and the ongoing issue of juvenile crime among boys aged 8-21 is striking. The song's call to end violence and promote positive change is as necessary now as it was then. It underscores the critical need for mentorship and positive role models in the lives of young individuals – a need that organizations like A Few Good MENtors, Inc. (AFGM) are striving to fulfill.

Mentorship, as advocated by AFGM, is a powerful tool in this ongoing struggle. By providing young boys with guidance, support, and positive influences, mentorship programs help steer them away from the path of violence and crime, offering alternatives that lead to personal growth and constructive community involvement. These programs embody the spirit of "Self Destruction" by offering a solution to the cycle of violence, echoing KRS-One's vision of empowering youth through positive action and community support.

The legacy of "Self Destruction" and the Stop the Violence Movement serves as a reminder of the work that still needs to be done. It calls on us to continue the fight against violence and to invest in the future of our youth through mentorship and support. By doing so, we honor the message of the song and the movement, turning their call to action into a sustained effort for change and improvement in our communities.

In essence, reflecting on "Self Destruction" isn't just about looking back; it's about acknowledging the ongoing challenges and reaffirming our commitment to positive change through mentorship and community involvement. The song's message, still relevant and powerful, inspires us to continue working towards a future where violence is replaced with understanding, guidance, and constructive growth.

AFGM: A Beacon of Hope and Transformation

In a society dealing with the challenges of fatherless homes and youth violence, A Few Good MENtors, Inc. (AFGM) stands as a beacon of hope and a catalyst for positive transformation. With our unique and effective approach, AFGM addresses these pressing issues head-on, offering a guiding light to young individuals who are at a critical crossroads in their lives.

At the heart of AFGM’s mission is the recognition of the profound impact that the absence of father figures and the prevalence of youth violence have on individuals and communities. This dual challenge creates a void in the lives of many young people, often leading them down a path marked by uncertainty, risk, and potential self-destruction. AFGM's role in this scenario is not just interventionist but also preventative, aiming to fill this void with positivity, guidance, and sustained support.

AFGM’s approach is distinguished by its comprehensive mentorship program. This program is not a one-size-fits-all solution; instead, it is tailored to address the multifaceted needs of each individual. Through one-on-one mentorship, group sessions, and various interactive activities, mentors provide support, share knowledge, and act as positive role models. This personal and direct engagement is pivotal in guiding these young individuals toward a more constructive and hopeful future.

The core values of AFGM form the foundation of its mentorship program:

Spirituality: Recognizing the importance of spiritual grounding, AFGM encourages young individuals to explore and develop their spiritual beliefs, which can be a source of strength and guidance throughout their lives.

Leadership: By fostering leadership skills, AFGM empowers youth to become positive influencers in their own lives and in their communities, inspiring others through their actions and decisions.

Finances: Financial literacy is key to independence and success. AFGM provides education on managing finances, understanding the value of money, and developing skills for financial stability.

Education: A strong emphasis is placed on the importance of education, both formal and informal, as a tool for personal development and as a stepping stone to better opportunities.

Health: Recognizing that health encompasses both physical and mental well-being, AFGM offers guidance on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and promotes awareness of mental health, which is often overlooked in young people.

Job/Careers: Career guidance and job preparedness are integral parts of the program, equipping youth with the skills and confidence needed to enter the workforce and pursue fulfilling careers.

Etiquette/Good Manners: AFGM also understands the importance of social skills and manners, teaching young individuals how to navigate various social settings with respect and confidence.

Through these core values, AFGM not only addresses the immediate needs of young individuals but also prepares them for long-term success and fulfillment. The organization's focus on holistic development ensures that the youth it serves are not just kept away from negative influences but are actively guided toward becoming well-rounded, responsible, and empowered individuals.
