Honoring Freedom Through Leadership Development

Issue #91
Welcome!
Hey G-Tribe! Welcome back to another Tuesday morning, which will shift your perspective on community building and the true meaning of freedom. For those just joining us, the G-Tribe stands for the GROW Tribe – a community of people committed to Guidance that Redefines Our Way of living, leading, and showing up in this world.
This week, we're discussing something that's been on my heart as we move through this season of celebrating freedom. With Juneteenth behind us and July 4th approaching, I've been reflecting on what true independence means in today's world. It's not just about breaking free from what holds us back. It's about using that freedom to lift others alongside us.
This isn't just another conversation about mentorship programs. This is about understanding how real leaders use their independence to create pathways for others to discover their own. When we talk about building stronger communities, we're referring to the kind of transformation that occurs when experienced leaders choose to collaborate rather than climb the ladder alone.
As I always say, grab your coffee, settle into that favorite spot, and let me share why I believe the strongest communities are built by leaders who understand that true freedom means having the power to open doors for others.

What Independence Means Today
Each July, we celebrate independence, but a deeper shift is happening in how today’s leaders define what freedom means. It’s no longer just about personal success. True independence now means creating freedom and opportunity for others.
🔄 A New Kind of Leadership Freedom
Forget the old model of "making it on your own." The most impactful leaders today use their success as a platform, not a finish line. They believe that real freedom includes the responsibility to mentor, uplift, and empower those around them.
“98% of Fortune 500 companies now offer mentoring programs—because developing others is essential, not optional.”
💡 What Modern Independence Looks Like
The most transformational leaders share three key traits:
They use success as a launchpad, not a trophy.
They build systems that help others rise.
They measure freedom by the number of people they help succeed.
This is leadership that multiplies impact—turning one person’s growth into community-wide transformation.
📈 The Ripple Effect of Mentorship
Youth with mentors are 55% more likely to attend college.
Mentoring reduces risky behavior and creates a “multiplier effect” where mentees become mentors.
At AFGM, we see this every day. One mentor doesn’t just support a young man—he uplifts families, classrooms, and entire neighborhoods.
🚫 Breaking the Scarcity Mindset
True leaders don’t compete for opportunity—they create more of it. They understand that empowering others only strengthens the entire community. Independence comes from building a world where everyone has a shot.
✅ Takeaway
Independence today means lifting others as you rise. If your leadership isn't creating more leaders, it's time to redefine what success looks like.

Civic Engagement as Leadership
Civic engagement is more than voting or attending town halls, it’s a dynamic tool for leadership development. Leaders who invest in their communities don’t just give back; they gain valuable skills, build cross-sector relationships, and strengthen their ability to lead in any environment.
Why It Matters
Engaging in civic life pushes you beyond your comfort zone. You navigate diverse perspectives, complex problems, and real-world challenges that sharpen your ability to communicate, collaborate, and lead effectively. These experiences build confidence and prepare you for high-stakes situations, whether it’s a city council meeting or a boardroom presentation.
Powerful Networks
Civic spaces connect you with business leaders, educators, and engaged citizens. These relationships often lead to unexpected opportunities and lasting partnerships. More importantly, they build social capital—the trust and networks that make communities thrive.
Transferable Skills
From managing community events to speaking at public forums, civic engagement helps you develop real-world skills like project management, budgeting, and systems thinking. You don’t need to start a nonprofit to make an impact; simply contributing to community improvement builds leadership.
Lifting Others as You Lead
Civic leaders also create platforms for others by mentoring, advocating for inclusion, and opening doors to leadership roles. This builds a pipeline of future leaders while addressing pressing community needs.
A Leadership Multiplier
When professionals view civic engagement as a form of leadership development, everyone benefits—communities gain skilled advocates, and organizations gain leaders with a broader vision, empathy, and collaboration skills.
In today’s world, civic engagement isn’t extra—it’s essential. It develops better leaders and builds stronger, more connected communities.

Michael’s Hot Take
Barbecues, Fireworks & Brotherhood
Alright, G-Tribe, here's my hot take on what's happening during this season between Juneteenth and July 4th. While everyone's planning barbecues and watching fireworks, there's something deeper going on that most people are missing entirely.
The Real Meaning of Freedom Season
This time of year isn't just about celebrating past freedom; it's also about embracing the present. It's about examining what we're doing with the freedom we have today. Juneteenth commemorates emancipation from slavery. July 4th celebrates independence from colonial rule. But both holidays raise the same fundamental question: What are you doing with your freedom?
I've been thinking about this a lot as I watch the young men in our AFGM program. They're not just celebrating historical freedom. They're actively creating freedom for themselves and their communities. They understand something that many adults have forgotten: freedom isn't just about what you can do. It's about what you choose to do for others.
Brotherhood Beyond the Barbecue
Every year, I watch families gather for barbecues and communities come together for fireworks. There's something beautiful about these traditions. But I also see missed opportunities. We're celebrating freedom in ways that don't create more freedom. We're enjoying independence in ways that don't build more independence.
Real brotherhood happens when the chains of life are broken. When your success creates pathways for others. When your freedom is used to break barriers that keep others from being free.
This is what I see in the strongest mentor relationships at AFGM. It's not just older guys helping younger guys. It's men who understand that their personal freedom isn't complete until they're actively working to create freedom for others.
The Barbecue Test
Here's my test for whether you're really celebrating freedom or just enjoying privilege: look around your barbecue this year. Who's missing? What young person could benefit from being included in your circle? What family could use some support? What neighbor might need to see what a healthy community looks like?
Real celebration of freedom involves expanding the circle. It means using your platform to create platforms for others. It means turning your barbecue into a space where relationships form that change trajectories.
I'm not saying you need to turn every social gathering into a formal mentoring session. But I am saying that leaders who understand freedom use every opportunity to model what freedom looks like and create opportunities for others to experience it.
Fireworks and Vision
Fireworks are impressive for about thirty minutes once a year. However, the real fireworks occur when someone's life trajectory changes because an adult decides to invest in their potential, when a young person starts believing in possibilities they couldn't see before, when a community develops its leaders instead of waiting for outside solutions.
The mentors who are making the most significant impact understand that their role isn't to be the fireworks. It's to help others discover their capacity to shine brightly.
This is what brotherhood really looks like. Not just guys hanging out together, but men who are committed to developing other men. Those who see their success as incomplete until it's creating opportunities for the next generation.
Freedom That Multiplies
True freedom multiplies. When you use your independence to create independence for others, you're not giving away your power; you're empowering them. You're expanding it. You're creating communities where leadership develops naturally, where young people grow up with examples of what's possible. Where success becomes something that lifts entire neighborhoods instead of just individuals.
This is what I want every man in the G-Tribe to understand: your freedom is fully realized only when you're using it to create freedom for others. Your independence is complete only when you're building independence in the people around you.
The Challenge
Here's my challenge for this season: don't just celebrate freedom. Create it. Don't just enjoy independence. Build it for others. Don't just attend the barbecue. Use it as an opportunity to expand your circle and form relationships that positively impact lives.
Look for the young person who needs to see what healthy adulthood looks like. Identify the family that could benefit from some stability and support. Identify the community need where your skills and resources could make a difference.
Because at the end of the day, the most patriotic thing you can do isn't wave a flag or sing the national anthem. It's using your freedom to create more freedom. Use your platform to build platforms for others. Use your success to create pathways for people who are still figuring out their direction.
That's not just good citizenship. That's revolutionary leadership. And it's exactly what our communities need more of.
So this year, when you're enjoying your barbecue and watching the fireworks, remember that the greatest celebration of freedom is creating conditions for others to be free. The most meaningful expression of independence is helping others discover their power to be independent.
That's what real brotherhood looks like. That's what transformational leadership creates. And that's how we build communities where everyone has the chance to celebrate their freedom, not just once a year, but every single day.
P.S. This week, I challenge every person in the G-Tribe to identify one specific way you can use your current platform to create opportunities for someone else. It doesn't have to be formal mentorship. It could be making an introduction, providing advice, or simply including someone in spaces where they can see new possibilities.
The work of transformation continues with each relationship we build and each door we open for others. Make it count.
