GROW: Leadership That Lives Beyond You

Honoring Black History Through Everyday Influence

Welcome Back, G-Tribe

Issue #119 – January 27, 2026

Welcome, G-Tribe

It’s February, and that means more than just the shortest month of the year. It’s Black History Month, a time to honor the legacies that built us, the leaders who shaped us, and the resilience that runs through our roots.

That legacy is why this newsletter exists.

G.R.O.W. stands for Guidance Redefines Our Way — because we believe that growth doesn’t just happen; it’s guided. And when that guidance is rooted in character, community, and consistency, it redefines what’s possible for us, our families, and our future.

This month, we’re focusing on leadership and legacy. But not the kind that gets written on plaques. We’re talking about the kind that’s passed down through presence, purpose, and how you show up when no one’s watching.

The question for all of us is simple:
What kind of legacy are you building, and who is it for?

Let’s grow!

Growth Spotlight: What Leadership Really Looks Like

We throw the word “leader” around a lot in schools, sports, politics, and even on social media bios. But real leadership doesn’t always come with a title or a spotlight. Sometimes, leadership is just being the first to stand up… or the last to give up.

Think of those who led without fanfare, like Ella Baker, who organized behind the scenes of the civil rights movement, reminding us that “strong people don't need strong leaders.” Or Bayard Rustin, whose influence on Dr. King and nonviolence shaped generations, even as he stayed out of the limelight.

Leadership isn’t about being seen; it’s about seeing what others need and stepping up to serve.

This week, reflect on this:
Where are you being called to lead not by power, but by purpose?

Bridge Builders: Leadership Looks Like an Invite

Sometimes leadership shows up as an open door or, in this case, a Super Bowl invite.

On Saturday, February 8, A Few Good MENtors is hosting our annual Super Bowl Party not just for the snacks and the score, but for something deeper: connection.

Mentorship doesn’t always happen in meetings. Sometimes it happens over wings and halftime debates. Sometimes the best way to build a bridge is just to show up, sit down, and share space.

Whether it’s your first event or your fiftieth, we hope you’ll pull up. Bring your mentee. Bring a friend. Bring your full self.

Because leadership isn’t just about what you say. It’s about creating environments where others feel safe, seen, and celebrated.

🏈 Date: Saturday, February 8
📍 Location: [Insert location or RSVP link if available]
🎉 Details: Food. Football. Fellowship. And a few good conversations you won’t want to miss.

🛠️ Leadership Challenge: Invite someone who might not come otherwise. That quiet mentee. That coworker on the fringe. That brother who’s been isolating. Let your invitation be the bridge.

“Development is a personal journey.”

Michael’s Hot Take: Stop Waiting to Be Chosen

Here’s my take, and I’ll say it plain:

Stop waiting for someone to give you permission to lead.

Some of us are still sitting on powerful ideas, calling, or next steps, not because we’re unqualified, but because we’re waiting for someone else to notice us, pick us, or clap for us. But leaders don’t need permission; they need conviction. Legacy isn't built on comfort zones. It’s built on consistent action when no one’s clapping.

This is where Mel Robbins’ “Let Them Theory” hits hard. The idea is simple: if they don’t believe in you, let them. If they doubt you, let them. If they overlook you, let them. Because while they’re busy underestimating you, you’ve got work to do. Let them talk. Let them scroll. Let them misunderstand.

Leadership rooted in purpose doesn’t beg for approval, it builds. Quietly. Daily. And then one day, that “nobody” becomes the one who shifted the culture.

If you see the problem, you might be the solution. If you’ve been through something hard, that might be your message to lead with. You don’t need a mic. You don’t need a title. You don’t even need everyone to agree.

You just need to decide: Is my life going to be about more than me?

Parent Insight of the Week

At dinner or in the car, ask your son:

“What’s one responsibility you take seriously?”

Discuss how showing up consistently, even in small things, builds trust and leadership capacity.

Try This With Your Mentee

Ask:

“If someone were to describe you as a leader, what would you want them to say?”
Follow up with:
“What can you do this week to live that description?”

Let them own their answer, then hold them accountable to it.
