GROW: Serving With Purpose
A new year. A clear vision. A community in motion.Issue #118January 20, 2026
Welcome, G-Tribe
Whether this is your first time reading or you’ve been with us for a while, welcome.
The G-Tribe is our Growth Tribe — parents, mentors, and young men committed to becoming better through guidance, discipline, and action.
G.R.O.W. stands for Guidance Redefines Our Way.
It’s the weekly newsletter from A Few Good MENtors, Inc., created to help families and mentors navigate leadership, character, and development with clarity and consistency.
If you’re new, this is a place for real conversations and real direction.
If you’ve been here, you know growth happens when people show up and stay engaged.
As we observe Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, this week centers on service, leadership, and the responsibility we have to guide the next generation.
Let’s GO!!
Growth Spotlight: Dr. King and the Power of Guidance
Dr. King is remembered for his words.
But his legacy was built on action, discipline, and service.
He believed leadership was not about position.
It was about responsibility.
One of his most quoted truths still applies today:
“Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.”
Mentoring is a service.
It’s choosing to guide rather than ignore.
To invest instead of complain.
To prepare the next generation instead of criticizing it.
Dr. King understood that progress doesn’t happen by chance.
It happens when people step forward and take responsibility for others.
That’s the heart of mentoring.

Bridge Builders: Translating Dr. King’s Legacy Into Mentorship
Dr. King didn’t wait for perfect conditions to lead.
He moved with conviction.
Mentoring works the same way.
It builds bridges between:
Experience and opportunity
Potential and discipline
Youth and wisdom
Mentorship is how values are transferred.
It’s how leadership is modeled.
It’s how communities are strengthened from the inside out.
When a mentor shows up consistently, he teaches:
Responsibility
Self-worth
Accountability
Courage
Those lessons last longer than speeches.

Our Foundation: The S.H.I.E.L.D.S. Values | At the core of A Few Good MENtors is a simple belief. That’s why everything we do is guided by S.H.I.E.L.D.S. — our core values framework designed to protect, guide, and develop young men into leaders of purpose and integrity. S.H.I.E.L.D.S. stands for:
These values aren’t slogans. Dr. King understood that strong values shape strong leaders. “If you want to solidify what you really know, than teach someone else.” President/Founder Michael Morgan |
Michael’s Hot Take: “Leadership Starts With Who You’re Willing to Serve”
Dr. King didn’t lead for recognition.
He led because he felt responsibility.
That distinction matters.
Too often, people talk about change without committing to the work that change requires.
Mentoring is that work.
It’s not glamorous.
It’s not always convenient.
It doesn’t come with applause.
But it shapes lives.
I’ve spent my life developing people and leading organizations.
What I’ve learned is this:
Leadership is revealed in who you’re willing to serve when there’s nothing in it for you.
Mentors don’t just give advice.
They give time.
They give patience.
They give presence.
Dr. King understood that service creates momentum.
That’s why at AFGM in 2026, this is The Year of Movement and Momentum matters.
Movement begins when someone decides to step up.
Momentum builds when they stay committed.
If we want stronger boys, we need committed men.
If we want better communities, we need guided youth.
If we want change, we have to participate in it.
Mentoring is one of the most direct ways to honor Dr. King’s legacy.
Not with words.
With action.
